Bitcoin’s Record Hashrate and the Journey to 1 Zettahash | by Saad Jameel | The Capital | Jan, 2025
Bitcoin’s hashrate is poised to reach new levels prior to the anticipated halving event, expected around 2027. As of January 3, 2025, the network’s average hashrate is projected to be 787 exahash per second (EH/s), with analysts predicting it may attain the unprecedented level of 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s) — equivalent to 1,000 EH/s — before the halving. This significant growth trend indicates an average yearly rise of almost 65% since 2020, highlighting the network’s increasing computing capacity and worldwide engagement.
The recent increase in hashrate has been remarkable, reaching a record high of 808 EH/s on December 31, 2024. This milestone indicates strong participation from miners and underscores the Bitcoin network’s resiliency in the face of escalating problems. The mining difficulty, an indicator of the challenge in mining a Bitcoin block, has markedly increased, attaining 109.78 trillion by early 2025.
The increase in difficulty signifies intensified rivalry within the network, propelled by greater involvement and improvements in mining technology.
This growth is accompanied with problems. Increasing energy expenses and the necessity for advanced, energy-efficient machinery are transforming the mining sector. To sustain competitiveness, numerous miners are implementing creative techniques, including…
