Voters Want Faster Crypto Regulation

The HarrisX poll polled 2,008 registered voters with robust results showing that there’s not a whole lot of public awareness of what blockchain technology is but there is backing for federal crypto legislation, with 86% supporting it.

The survey shows that 70% of voters feel that the U.S. should already have robust cryptocurrency regulations.The survey results revealed that 70% of voters were of the opinion that the U.S. should already have sound cryptocurrency laws. Another 62% said it is important for America to lead global digital finance rather than allowing overseas jurisdictions to dominate the sector.

The findings had also revealed that there was dissatisfaction at the current regulatory approach. Around 60% of respondents said they prefer straightforward federal legislation over regulation through enforcement actions.

Concerns over offshore crypto activity also played a major role. Only one-third of voters knew that eight of the ten largest crypto exchanges are based outside the United States. After learning that fact, 46% said the situation was a problem for the country.

CLARITY Act Gains Cross-Party Support

Crypto Policy Could Influence 2026 Elections

The Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act of 2025 seeks to define regulators’ ability to regulate different classes of digital tokens and create guidelines for crypto exchanges and custodians.

Awareness of the bill currently is low, but rises dramatically when a neutral explanation of the bill was given to voters. The survey shows 52% for and 11% against the legislation.

There was strong support from Republicans, Democrats and independents, demonstrating crypto’s increased popular appeal on a bipartisan basis.

Additionally, the poll revealed that the topic of crypto regulation could emerge as a significant driver for the 2026 midterm elections. Some 37% would say they would be more inclined to vote for a senator who votes for the CLARITY Act. At the same time, 47% admitted they would be willing to vote on behalf of any political party if their candidate pledged to promote pro-crypto measures.

National security concerns are also driving momentum behind the bill. Over half respondents felt digital payments outside of U.S. borders would threaten U.S. national security and negatively affect the contribution U.S. dollars make to the international monetary system.

President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said the war in Ukraine was winding down, slamming Western support for Kyiv, as the first day of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire was marked by mutual accusations of violations.

Putin spoke after telling soldiers at the scaled-down Victory Day parade in Moscow that they were fighting an “aggressive force” in Ukraine, backed by all of NATO and describing his war goals as “just.”

The Russian leader has made the memory of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II a central narrative of his 25-year rule and repeatedly invoked it to justify his Ukraine offensive.

Russian authorities typically mark the Victory Day parade with pomp and grandeur. But a spate of Ukrainian long-range attacks in recent weeks prompted the Kremlin to ramp up security measures and downsize this year’s celebrations.

When asked after the parade whether the Western military aid to Ukraine had gone too far, Putin said: “They started ratcheting up the confrontation with Russia, which continues to this day.

“I think it [the conflict] is heading to an end but it’s still a serious matter.”

“They spent months waiting for Russia to suffer a crushing defeat, for its statehood to collapse. It didn’t work out.

“And then they got stuck in that groove and now they can’t get out of it,” Putin said, referring to the Western countries.

Putin added he was ready to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a third country only once all conditions for a potential peace agreement were settled.

“This should be the final point, not the negotiations themselves,” he said.

Ceasefire violations

After two failed attempts at truces this week by both Russia and Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday announced that a three-day ceasefire between both sides would come into effect from Saturday.

Moscow and Kyiv traded accusations of violations, but no major strikes were reported, despite continued drone activity and civilian casualties on both sides.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump posted on his Truth Social network, adding the ceasefire would be accompanied by a prisoner exchange.

The Kremlin said that as of now there were no plans to prolong the truce.

The warring sides also agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners each during the truce. But Putin said Saturday that Russia had not yet received any proposals from Ukraine on the exchange.

Scaled-down parade

The parade was vastly smaller compared to previous years, with no military hardware on display for the first time in nearly two decades and only a handful of foreign dignitaries in attendance — most of them leaders of Russia’s close allies.

In an address to the parade, attended by Russian military units as well as soldiers from North Korea, Putin invoked the Soviet victory to rally support for his army in Ukraine.

“The great feat of the generation of victors inspires the soldiers carrying out the goals of the special military operation today,” Putin said.

“They are confronting an aggressive force armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc. And despite this, our heroes move forward,” he said.

“I firmly believe that our cause is just,” he added later.

The speech drew a cool reception from some in Moscow, with internet outages and fatigue over the four-year war casting a shadow over the events.

When asked how she felt on Victory Day, which marks the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, 36-year-old economist Elena replied: “Nothing.”

“I need the internet, and I don’t have it,” she told AFP from central Moscow, saying she would not watch the parade.

Russia has introduced intermittent internet shutdowns for the duration of the parade, citing increased threats from Ukrainian attacks.

Only the leaders of Belarus, Malaysia, Laos, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan were listed as attending, in contrast to high-profile visitors including China’s Xi Jinping during last year’s event.

Now in its fifth year, the war has killed hundreds of thousands of people and spiraled into Europe’s deadliest since World War II.

U.S.-mediated talks on ending the fighting have shown little progress since February, when Washington shifted focus to its war against Iran.

Hoskinson claimed that the legislation, after 137 amendments, effectively hands “the entire keys to the cryptocurrency kingdom” to the SEC, requiring projects to seek exemptions rather than operating freely.

“You have to go beg and plead for them to make it not a security. All new projects are securities by default. How is that any better than what scary Gary gave us under Biden?” he said.

Hoskinson directly challenged Garlinghouse’s pragmatic stance on the bill.

“You still got people like Brad saying, well, it’s not perfect, but we just got to get something,” he stressed. “Hand it to the same people who sued us. That’s better?”

The Cardano founder questioned whether passing flawed legislation could ever be corrected, citing the Securities Exchange Act of 1933.

“93 years later, have we been able to change it? No. You pass it, you own it forever,” he said. “Sorry, Brad. It’s not better than chaos.”

Hoskinson framed his opposition in ideological terms, stating he “signed up for freedom” and “a revolution,” not a system where “everything is a custodial wallet” and “every transaction is KYC.”

He accused industry leaders of accepting compromised legislation in exchange for power, wealth, and elite status, abandoning the ideals of the crypto revolution.

“They’ve taken their silver so they can be part of a new oligarchy,” he said, emphasizing that crypto leaders mistakenly believe they will be treated better than ordinary users.

Hoskinson has become increasingly outspoken against the Trump administration’s approach to crypto.

He previously argued that the release of the Trump-backed meme coin in early 2025 undermined cross-party momentum, saying legislation such as the CLARITY Act had enjoyed strong support from both parties before the move.

More recently, he criticized David Sacks, saying that the White House AI and crypto czar failed the industry by allowing regulatory efforts to stall.

U.S. President Donald Trump backs a Russian proposal for Moscow to take full control of two Ukrainian regions and freeze the front line in two others which Moscow only partially controls, a source told AFP.

The source with knowledge of the matter said Russian President Vladimir Putin “de facto demands that Ukraine leave Donbas,” an area consisting of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine.

“Trump is inclined to support it,” the source said.

Trump on Saturday spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders about his talks Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The Ukrainian president refused to leave Donbas,” the source said.

Zelensky has rejected any territorial concessions, saying he is bound by Ukraine’s constitution. But he has not ruled out discussing the issue at a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin.

The New York Times also cited two senior European officials saying Trump supported Putin’s plan “to end the war in Ukraine by ceding unconquered territory to the Russian invaders, rather than try for a ceasefire.”

The Financial Times reported that Putin had told Trump that “he could freeze the rest of the front line if his core demands were met” and the message had been relayed directly by Trump in his call on Saturday.

AFP’s source said U.S. officials had said that if Russia’s demands were met then “Putin would not continue the offensive in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions so there would be a kind of freeze there.

“But de facto it all will depend on Putin’s word of honor,” the source said.

Several months into its invasion of Ukraine, Russia in September 2022 claimed to have annexed all four Ukrainian regions even though its troops still do not fully control any of them.

Russian forces now occupy almost all of the Luhansk region and most of the Donetsk region, including their regional capitals.

That is not the case for Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, where the main hubs are still under Ukrainian control.

Russia previously annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.
